On March 13, 1893 Tufts was appointed receiver for the insolvent Kansas Trust and Banking Company. He moved to Atchison from Kansas City and attempted to bring about the company's recovery. After four years Tufts quit the receivership of the company. In the fall of 1897 he returned to Kansas City and fully resumed his real estate and mortgages brokerage affairs. In 1877 Tufts moved from New Hampshire to Atchison, Kansas, where he was employed as an assistant engineer by the Union Pacific Railroad. Although trained as a civil engineer at the New London (New Hampshire) Institute, by 1879, Tufts began to dabble in mortgage and real estate deals while still an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad.
